what about schools?

Teaching children about Physics, Chemistry, Math – this is only 30% of education. We do have to teach them about things which will help them earn a livelihood, but what about the other 70%? The unconscious mind of the student registers everything – and very fast! And how we behave in the classroom is the way they behave in society.  In schools, our effort should be to sow some good seeds in their mind, so that they don’t contribute bitter fruits in society when they grow up. When will we start teaching children how to behave well? How to listen, how to observe, how to care? Today schools spend 90% time on academics, which will be soon taken over completely by technology. Do teachers know enough to teach the most important subjects – resilience, responsibility, appreciation, sensitivity?

    I don’t agree with the statement that ninety percent time is devoted to academics. As an educator we struggle to find time for teaching subjects because of the various activities conducted for the students, in which they participate actively throughout the year .

    Your reflections are very very pertinent. I have been working to build attributes and qualities in teachers first, and at the same time getting them to work with students. However, a lot is dependent on the school Principal! The principal’s belief systems and conviction sets the tone and culture. If he/she gives more importance to exams and academic performance alone then teachers just tow the line!
    Mission continues but it’s a long journey before we achieve the first milestone

      I do agree with your statement that the belief system of the Principal matters a lot but at the same time it is the philosophy of the institution that plays a pivotal role. A Principal acts according to the guidelines set for her/him by the policy makers of the instituion.

    Does our system allow time and space for teachers to spare any time at all to important life skills required for students that will enable them to be successful and happy global citizens. Efforts however, are being made to include values and life skills in school curriculum [CBSE] – wish it does get implemented and executed effectively across all schools!

    Very true. So many children of our generation have memories of school that are about being hit on the knuckles, made to kneel down or the more subtle – ‘donkey / idiot/ stupid’ title they had in school. Today i think it is a lot better, yet children recognise subtle signs – ‘i don’t think miss liked me saying that’, ‘i think miss was in an angry mood today’ etc. Those comments really tell us how much they observe and absorb.

    This seems relevant in today’s scenario – though I think this has been true for a while now. Very few adults in a child’s life seem to be successful in enabling them to live their lives fruitfully, in a way that contributes towards harmonious living, and one that will enable them to be happy.
